What is Blended Learning?
Blended learning is an approach to education that combines in-person instruction with online learning.
A blended learning experience is affected by the 3 M's: Medium, Modality and Method
The medium involves the tools that are used ranging from paper and pencil, to computer tools
The modality is the physical learning environment such as in the classroom, online, in-person, virtual or another setting such a as a field trip
The method is how the learning takes place and is the most important: how are the students using the technology or learning medium and what form of pedagogy is the teacher using to be effective and innovative
Online learning gives students some control over the time, place, path or pace of their learning
The Christensen Institute describes several different ways to present blended learning through Rotation, Flex, A la Carte and Enriched Virtual
Rotation can be further sub divided into stations, labs, individual rotations and flipped classroom
Online learning allows the students an entry into worlds they would not otherwise be able to access
